He has done it again ladies and gentlemen, another awesome video. I have to admit Alex I was one of those guys you were talking about around the 14 minute mark. I have been accused lately of having really robotic and boxy playing. I was told your runs sound like exercises or boring scales. Do I know the theory that went with everything you showed (YOU BET I DO) but it doesn’t matter. For once I am just gonna let go and not worry about the theory because now I see the value of feel and the difference articulation as opposed to solid theory makes in one’s playing! Thanks again.

Man Alex; You don’t have any reason to have a self esteem problem. How do you develop that “feel”. Great job. Thanks for making it so understandable.

DO YOU HAVE ANY DRILLS THAT WILL TEACH ME TO PLAY WITH ALL MY FINGERS INSTEAD OF JUST MY THUMB. I AM A THUMB ONLY PLAYER.

The 2nd video is a good place to start… Doing simple exercises slowly with the two plucking fingers will held you build the ‘habit’ you’re looking for… Peace Also i cover some right hand stuff in the full Simple Bass Playing System… Keep watching…

This is exactly what I am trying to do now, working with chords and trying like heck to understand the progression. I think I was witnessing a 1-5-7, 1-5-flat 7. My problem comes from learning on my own and developing some serious bad habits. I have however ordered your material in the past and just as you state in your videos, I really don’t have the time to just sit down and go with the flow. Plus I am 56 years old and retention is premium, if you know what I mean. Sometimes I feel like a one legged man in a sprinting competition, however I keep fighting the fight. If I could just catch the concept I would be on my way. So in the meantime, I just practice scales and trying to catch the four step movement of each chord. I just don’t know how to apply them. It’s kinda like a Jigsaw puzzle, I have the pieces, I just don’t where they fit. I appreciate the videos though. Hopefully one day the old light bulb will finally light up. Thanks again for the help. Hey Greg, glad to hear from ya but to be clear – The patterns you saw were not a 1-5-7 & 1-5-b7… It’s a 1-5-10 and 1-5-b10, but again I wanna ask you to not theorize it yet. If you just admitted that you don’t know how to piece it together the first thing you need to do is JUST PLAY. Go watch the video again – Putting the pieces together really isn’t that difficult, just take it one chord movement at a time, and just play something to first raise your confidence.

  36. marco Avatar

    Alex,

Awesome work and effort, Its nice to see people like you who is really passionate about bass playing, my compliments 🙂

I ve had a quick watch to the video above and the teaching is well organized , but I find useful to start to explain how the cord is constructed and then moving around it, infact most of the students ask me 1st to teach him “how that cord sound like that??” what are the notes you are using in the -7 chords, your video are based on the fact that there is no need to study theory to play a good standard bass playing and that implements a different approach to teaching bass playing.

All this to say that may be a little theory explanations in between the talks good speed up the process of understanding where the different patterns come from.

    Excellent work Alex!!!
    Cheers

Hey Alex, thanks for this simple lesson. Shows how easy it is to just take 3 notes from a chord and come up with a cool sounding bassline. The harder bit is putting in the extra frills to make it come to life. Can you help with that too?

    Alex,

I have played bass for years. I have been able to mimic quite a bit, but always seemed to be missing the freedom of applied theory in creating bass lines of my own. I have tried to learn theory on my own and understand a bit. This video removes the theory, where I always over thought, worried and got confused and frustrated, and replaced it with safe note choices to, guidelines to experiment with.
Your enthusiasm and simplified explanation allows focus on bringing the base line alive within the song.

    Beautiful! Thank you very much.

    Gabriel
